At the heart of the Cantabrian mountains,
in the "Principado de Asturias", is located SOMIEDO, classified
as National Nature Reserve in 1988, and Biosphere Nature Reserve
in 2000.
SOMIEDO boasts a very remarkable cultural
and ethnographic heritage as well as a stunning scenery. Over centuries
"Vaqueiros" and "Xaldos" (folk from Somiedo who take
care of the cattle and sheep respectively) have safeguarded the natural
environment. Thanks to their ancestral wisdom we can nowadays enjoy this
paradise where brown bears and capercailles live together in mythical beech
tree forests, crystal-clear lakes and overwhelming silence only broken from
time to time by drumming of the "vaqueiras", the twitter of birds
at dawn or the silvery tinkle of the brooks.
