The Place

At the highest point of Somiedo Nature Reserve, by the border with Leon province, are to be found the glacial valleys. On one of them, under the Rebezo mountain (at an altitude of 1,664 metres) is placed the Sousas "braña" (vaqueiros' summer villages for cattle grazing). The valley comes down 900 metres along 6 km. to close on the council town.

This beautiful valley is run along by the river "La Cueva" or "Coto" where six bridges link both banks, the royal pathway and the two villages that make up the parish.

The "Coto de Buenamadre" is located beneath the beech tree forest called "La Enramada". Today depopulated, this hamlet was between the 16th and the 19th centuries one of the four administrative entities that formed the Somiedo council, namely, Urria, Valle del Lago, San Pedro and La Pola. These two last villages, once vaqueiros' brañas, form today the capital town of the council.
